Duties

This position serves as the primary Marine Investigator providing technical expertise and leadership to the Captain of the Port (COTP)/Officer in Charge Marine Inspection (OCMI) in all aspects of marine all aspects of marine casualty investigations. The Marine Investigator serves as the Civilian resident Prevention Department's source for continuity of investigation program policies, technical issues, special program support activity and is a primary contact with other Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies related to marine investigations.Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Qualifications

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 grade level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include:  Independently conducting marine investigations, to include field work such as the subpoena of witnesses, charging of individuals, and interviewing witnesses; Testifying as an expert witness in courtrooms regarding marine investigations; Determining compliance with laws, regulations, and applicable standards, verifying the existence of proper vessel documentation and the certification and safe and proper operating order of systems (navigation, communication, alarm, lifesaving, firefighting, and pollution prevention systems) and machinery, and the soundness and acceptable parameters of vessel structures and hulls; Providing technical expertise and training to junior marine investigators; Writing analytical and investigative reports. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
