This position will serve as the Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in the Division of Quality Management, Environmental Health & Safety Department at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center located in Phoenix, Arizona. This position will provide planning & implementation of a multi-faceted institutional environmental safety program to furnish health care to patients and to protect health care providers from harm. This position will report to the Chief of Environmental Health Services on-site.

Duties

Ensure management systems are in place to address safety issues and risks. Consults with all departments when assistance is needed in the development of improved policies and procedures as specified in the Joint Commission (TJC) standards for functional safety, environment of care, life safety, sanitation, and for infection control. Evaluates architectural and engineering construction drawings, and other plans for facility renovation for compliance with contemporary infection control and occupational safety principles and construction standards, life safety, and building and utility codes. Maintains an effective occupational safety and health program that includes the prevention, investigation and appropriate reporting of workplace injuries. Reviews all worker injury incidents, conducts epidemiological investigations and recommends preventive measures to reduce reoccurrence. Investigates and identifies conditions and abatement controls for toxicological, biological, or physical hazards to patients, staff, or visitors. Maintains the hazardous materials and wastes management program, including the Hazard Communications and Chemical Laboratory Hygiene Programs. Responsible for hazardous chemical waste disposal in compliance with local, state and federal regulations. Conducts radiation surveillance activities in coordination with the National Institutes of Health licensed radiation safety officer in the federal compliance program for research related radio-isotopes management and disposal.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0018-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples Include: Ensure management systems are in place to address safety issues and risks; Consult with various departments related to development/revision of policies and procedures Evaluate architectural and engineering construction drawings or other plans for facility renovation related to compliance with contemporary infection control and occupational safety principles and construction standards, life safety, and building and utility codes. Oversight of hazardous chemical waste disposal in compliance with local, state and federal regulations. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
