You will serve as a CHEMIST in the Analytical and Environmental Chemistry Branch (Code 134.1) in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Materials Test Laboratory (Code 134) of the Quality Assurance Office (Code 130) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will plan and conduct chemical and instrumental studies to analyze a variety of environmental samples. You will develop, justify, and implement projects to acquire new instrumentation or modify existing equipment to improve efficiency. You will monitor the quality of work performed by the analysts through review of completed samples. You will accompany agency personnel in inspection assignments.

Requirements

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience utilizing principles and skills needed in calibration and operation of instrumentation such as pH meters, carbon/sulfur determinator, microwave digestion instrumentation, mercury analyzers, optical emission spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, ion chromatographs, rapids flow analyzers, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, etc. in order to employ their use in the analysis of various materials and substances. Experience evaluating specific instrument uses in the analyses of chemical sample investigations. Experience providing solutions to assignments frequently requiring complex involved chemistry, interaction and familiarity with other science disciplines such as mathematics, physics, and electronics. Experience serving as a subject matter expert in designated working areas. Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
