This position is for a Health Technician (Ophthalmology) in the Eye Clinic located at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Incumbent is the front line point of contact and performs a combination of technical (non-professional medical) and administrative tasks related to the treatment and care of eye patients. Position reports to the Chief, of the Eye Clinic.
Duties
Performs intake for clinic patient, including obtaining patient history, and past ocular history.
Measures current prescriptions and records visual acuities.
Performs pupillary assessment and retinal photography.
Performs OCT Testing of the optic nerve and retina.
Administers eye drops, ointment and other appropriate medications.
Qualifications

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
Individual Occupational Requirements
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements you must also meet the following Minimum Qualifications -
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-7: knowledge of patient eye-care, ophthalmology and optometry related medical terminology, eye anatomy, diagnostic procedures and techniques and experience that included performing certain eye tests that require specialized knowledge in taking patient histories; performing refractions at the phoropter, performing OCT and automated visual field testing, and checking intraocular pressures at the slit lamp.
GS-8: performing assessment of pupils for afferent pupillary defects, assisting procedures such as confrontational visual fields, corneal topography, pachymetry and keratometry; perform biometry testing pre-operatively to assist in cataract surgery lens determination; performs advanced ocular motility testing; assist in equipment maintenance and calibration.
Selective Placement Factor: All applicants must meet the following Selective Placement Factors in order to be considered for this position. Failure to meet these factors will result in loss of consideration. Must provide copy of the certification with your application.
GS-7: Must possess certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
GS-8: Must possess certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
