About the Position: This position is with the Joint Munitions Command located at McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, McAlester, Ok. This position serves as a Supervisory Firefighter, managing routine firefighting and hazardous material responses, overseeing fire prevention and training programs, and serving as acting Fire Chief when needed.
Duties
Plan and execute fire prevention, training, and hazardous material programs.
Manage firefighting, rescue, and first aid operations, ensuring adherence to established protocols.
Distribute and balance workload among employees, ensuring timely completion and adherence to established workflows.
Monitor work in progress and review completed work for compliance with supervisors' instructions.
Manage routine and emergency fire protection operations for assigned areas on the installation.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires Department of Defense, IFSAC, or Pro Board professional certifications. Please see the Additional Information section below for a list of required certifications.
- This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.
- Must possess State and National Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
- Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Hazardous Material Technician level certification.
- This position requires 72 hours work week (144 hours bi-weekly).
- This position requires you possess and maintain a valid stateside driver’s license.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires you to wear a uniform and/or wear personal protective equipment as appropriate and complies with safety and health directives (OSHA).
- This position requires a pre-employment physical fitness assessment and continued participation in a scheduled physical fitness program as directed by current Army regulatory guidance.
- The position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; performing rescue operations to extract individuals from hazardous situations; operating fire communications equipment to coordinate emergency responses; controlling hazardous materials incidents to ensure public and environmental safety; and providing fire protection and prevention training to facilitate fire safety implementation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Selective Placement Factor: This position has selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment.
Maximum Entry Age (MEA)
The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.
Maximum Re-entry Age
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57, if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
