Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Operations Support, Immediate Office of the Executive Assistant Commissioner, located in Washington, DC.

Duties

This position serves as the Deputy to the Chief of Staff (CoS) responsible for advising the Executive Assistant Commissioner (EAC) and Deputy EAC on a variety of operational issues of interest. The incumbent works in close coordination with the CoS, EAC, DEAC, OS Assistant Commissioners and Executive Directors providing advice and counsel to the CoS on a variety of highly complex and sensitive issues of critical importance. This position starts at a salary of $167,603.00 (GS-15, Step 1) to $195,200.00 (GS-15, Step 10). While serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff, your duties will include: Participating fully with the CoS, DEAC, EAC and other CBP officials in the review and appraisal of major policy issues and questions with major implications for CBP's stance on variety of germane issues; Coordinating the review and analysis of all policy proposals of direct interest to the CoS, DEAC, and EAC. Conducting and evaluating a wide range of confidential studies and reports for the CoS, DEAC, and EAC designed to assist in the interpretation of vast arrays of information or advising the CoS, DEAC, and EAC on the implementation of legislation; Reviewing all programs for effectiveness and ensuring that trends are identified and presented in concert with the urgency dictated by the condition; and Providing close and confidential advice to the COS on a range of issues and matters in which the CoS is involved on a day-to-day basis.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-15 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Supervising and directing supervisors and employees in the establishment of goals and objectives, work planning and organization, work assignments, and personnel management responsibilities; Acting as an advisor and liaison to senior management on sensitive information and activities; Managing and coordinating tasks for executive level actions; and Conducting executive level briefings. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 01/17/2025. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
