About the Position: Serves as an armed Security Guard for a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF). This position is restricted to persons entitled to Veterans' Preference; if there are no Veterans' preference eligible applicants available, non-preference applicants may be considered. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Responsible for conducting both internal and external patrols of the hospital, parking lots/garages, and grounds. Provides personal security of patients, staff(including addressing the risks of violence in the workplace), and visitors coming to the MTF. Conducts initial inquiries for both administrative and potential criminal complaints and reports findings to the MTF Provost Marshal/Security Officer. Ensures incident scene is preserved for law enforcement investigators and provides written reports of findings concerning incident to the supervisor. Assists with providing protection to VIPs, General Officers, foreign dignitaries, and other high-ranking members of the federal, state and local government.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Those notable to obtain or maintain this standard must be immediately removed from all security duties involving the handling, carrying, or transferring of firearms.
• Must possess and maintain a valid US state and local government driver's license.
• This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
• Required to be screened for and may be required to obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations(hepatitis, influenza, etc.), unless exempted by a licensed physician.
• Required to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties. Pre-employment physical required and annually thereafter.
• Firearms testing and successful qualification to service component published standards required on a semi-annual basis. This may include firing at night, with one hand, or while under time or physical stress.
• Position requires employee to perform routine and emergency daily duties while wearing a uniform and/or protective clothing to include facial/ head worn protective masks soft body armor where assigned, and duty belt with police equipment.
• Incumbent must be able to act in the capacity of a first responder to critical incidents, including but not limited to: criminal acts, natural disasters, lost or missing persons, mass casualties, and/or acts of terror or mass destruction.
• You will be prepared to execute the lawful orders of critical incident commanders, military or civilian, and assigned duties as such.
• Employee must be trained and maintain current required certifications in CPR and first aid. May act as a first responder in a medical emergency.
• This will include active participation in training and exercises designed to determine the readiness of responding forces or the effectiveness of protective measures and programs.
• During such actual emergencies/critical incidents, you may incur, without prior notice, extra shifts, long hours standing at security or traffic control posts, extended duty hours between meal breaks, and working outdoors in inclement weather.
• Such duties, even if performed properly may place you in danger of severe personal injury, loss of limb, or even death.
• This position has the following medical requirements; good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
• This position is under the Federal Motor Operations medical requirement specified in 5 Code of Federal Regulations Section 930 Part 109; persons operating a Government owned or leased vehicle are subject to medical testing once every 4 years.
• This position may require a character investigation to secure incumbent’s honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
• You must undergo a specific initial background checks, investigation and periodic re-verification check of multiple agency records to obtain and maintain a suitable determination to occupy a position having regular contact with children.
• This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing protective services, such as armed guard protection of life or government property, patrolling or monitoring access control, writing incidents reports and findings, or responding to alarms in the facility. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). Individual Occupational Requirement: Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. For Security Guard positions in a hospital setting, experience as a psychiatric nursing assistant or a similar position safeguarding patients is qualifying.
