Duties

The incumbent serves as the headquarters' expert authority in the field of industrial hygiene, providing technical advice to all CBP headquarters leaders, senior management officials, and field supervisors. This position starts at a salary of $105,383.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $137,000.00 (GS-13, Step 10). Typical duties include: Serving as the headquarters' expert authority in the field of industrial hygiene, providing technical advice to all CBP headquarters leaders, senior management officials, and field supervisors. Advising management of findings and when warranted, takes corrective action to develop and implement measures to diminish the health risks. Conducting environmental health and safety surveys, inspections, and program evaluations that include, but are not limited to asbestos removal; abatement, operation and maintenance programs; radon testing and remediation; indoor air quality testing and mediation; lead in water testing; hazardous materials handling; ergonomics; tuberculosis; blood borne pathogens; confined space entry; and the Hazard Communication Program. Facilities may include, but are not limited to, laboratories, office buildings, Border Patrol checkpoints, border stations, warehouses, detention and removal facilities, aircraft and marine support facilities, inspection facilities at international airports, seaports, and land border crossings, maintenance shops, radar and communication facilities, and firing ranges. Responding to management, employee, and union complaints or grievances of potential health hazards by conducting studies, inspections, and surveys involving illumination, noise, toxic chemicals (including asbestos), as well as, air quality, ergonomics, food sanitation, water supply, ventilation, temperature, insect and rodent control, solid and liquid waste disposal, and personal protective equipment (respirators and eye protection).

Basic Requirements The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or B. A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or C. Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Copies of your current registration, transcripts or degree must be submitted at the time of your application. In addition to meeting the basic requirement listed above, applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience described below. Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Conducting studies and surveys of a variety of industrial environmental problems. Collecting of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical and biological stresses. Analyzing the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on health and well-being of workers and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 01/14/2025. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
