Qualifications
In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as experience in planning and conducting inspections of clean-up sites and/or facilities to analyze and investigate a variety of safety and health hazards associated with a work environment; experience making recommendations and/or developing technical solutions on issues relating to occupational safety and health standards.
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:
Skill in applying, a wide range of concepts, principles, and methodologies of the industrial hygiene or the consumer safety fields sufficient to conduct of occupational health inspections of complex work sites and field locations.
Skill in written communication.
Knowledge required to recognize environmental factors and stresses associated with complex work operations, and to ascertain their effects on the health and well-being of workers.
Skill in oral communication.
Ability to develop, implement and document a comprehensive health and safety program.
Skill in tracking and inputting data.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
Industrial Hygienist - 0690
You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related sciences; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). NOTE: Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
