The purpose of the position is to prevent the spread of zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species (AIS) in the park. The position will also perform a variety of biological science technical support assignments in one or more of the following program areas: wildlife, fisheries, or plants. Duties

Field crew lead for preventing spread of aquatic invasive species. Responsible for scheduling field season operations and daily tasks of volunteers and other technicians. Decontaminate watercraft with high-temperature water to prevent the spread of zebra mussels. Conduct data entry, analysis, and prepare reports. Assist with other aquatic ecology and water quality projects. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g. equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/10/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. EXPERIENCE: Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience is leading or coordinating field work in water sampling, fish, mussel, macroinvertebrate, or amphibian inventory and monitoring, etc., using a microscope to identify aquatic organisms, and or assisting a higher-level specialist in developing field aquatic resources projects and initial analysis of data. -OR- EDUCATION: Have successfully completed one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level study that directly applies to the position such as aquatic biology, wetland ecology, etc. You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating degree earned and credit hours in order to qualify based on education. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected. -OR- Combination: Have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above that when combined must equal 100%. Only graduate level coursework in aquatic biology, wetland ecology is considered qualifying when combined with specialized experience. You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating degree earned and credit hours in order to qualify based on education. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
