The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of complex biological science technical support functions in one, or more, of the following program areas: wildlife, fisheries, or plants.

Duties

The Biological Science Technician serves in the resource stewardship and education division of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway (SACN). Plan, organize, schedule, and execute a wide variety of established natural resource management projects. Lead field crews conducting terrestrial restoration projects and may assist with aquatic monitoring projects focused on zebra mussels, native mussels, native fish, and invasive plant species. Assist with acoustic bat monitoring, deploying, and retrieving acoustic monitors from the field, and down/uploading the data to the appropriate site as per the bat protocol. Field observations of natural resource conditions and assist with vegetation monitoring and invasive plant treatments. Implement established natural resource management projects and field research by following instructions and standardized procedures to collect and organize field data. Perform field and laboratory analysis of collected samples. Ensure adequate quality control of data and collected samples. Record all data collected and providing preliminary assessment and classification of the information will be expected. Recommend management actions based on prescribed guidelines in existing park plans and protocols. Use various computer programs and databases for data entry and managing and manipulating digital images. Provide technical information, ensure quality control, and solve logistical or operational problems within the scope of the incumbent's knowledge and authority. Advise and provide instruction for other employees and volunteers how to conduct field tasks safely and efficiently. Work will be focused on projects related to invasive plant control, habitat restoration, plant and animal inventory and monitoring, and database management. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/13/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Conducting biological field studies and surveys and assembling the information; Following standardized procedures to collect data on Wildlife, Fisheries or Plants; Using statistical methods and procedures to perform testing of field data collected; installing operating and maintaining resource management requirement (tools, sampling and monitoring, photographic and laboratory equipment); Preparing graphs, charts and illustration for reports and technical publications relating to biological management activities. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one (1) full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. One (1) year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one (1) year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. -OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Completion of a percentage of the specialized experience and education listed above and when combined totals 100%. NOTE: If you are qualifying based in part, upon education, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts. You must include hours per week worked. You must submit a copy of your transcripts that identifies for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade received, and date completed. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. CTAP/ICTAP: CTAP/ICTAP provides placement assistance to permanent Federal employees who are surplus, displaced, or involuntarily separated. Applicants claiming CTAP/ICTAP eligibility must submit a copy of their most recent performance appraisal, proof of eligibility, and most current SF-50 noting position, grade level, and duty location with their application.
