Duties
This position is in the Division of Resource Management. The employee performs as a member of the Great Lakes Invasive Plant Management Team field crew. Primary duties include removal of invasive plants using manual and chemical methods, and habitat restoration.
The employee performs invasive plant control through the use of herbicides and manual tools. The employee makes educated decisions to resolve problems in the field without direct supervision. He/she is expected to collect data using a GPS unit and must be able to identify invasive plants and native plants in the field. The employee may be called on to handle details regarding vehicle care, storage and use of pesticides, maintenance and use of spray equipment and hand tools, and documentation of fieldwork.
The duties of this position require the employee to be in good physical condition. Considerable time will be spent driving, hiking in hazardous terrain, and using tools and equipment. Field time will subject the employee to extreme weather conditions (i.e., temperatures over 100 degree F in the summer) and heavy insect outbreaks. Occasional time will also be spent in an office environment reviewing data, transcribing information, and maintaining equipment. Mental alertness, stability, and tact in dealing with program partners and the public are required.
Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; participating in site rehabilitation through soil preparation, native seed dispersal, live planting and weeding; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, chemical, and/or bio-control methods in planned management of exotics (non-natives), native species, and/or weeds. Specialized experience includes research activity or control program work, nursery work that required growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field of scientific study, such as in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics, wildlife biology, or other directly related subject matter. At least 6 semester hours of courses directly related to plant studies such as: plant biology, plant physiology, botany, plant taxonomy, soils, etc. You must include transcripts.

accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
