Duties

This is a developmental position being filled at the WG-07, WG-09, or WG-11 levels. The full performance WG-11 level of this position entails the following duties: Operate various testing equipment to perform nondestructive tests on ammunition and ammunition components. Calculate equipment settings and tolerance to obtain desired/required special resolution, contrast, sensitivity and magnification. Perform trial exposures for technique development and evaluation of test. Perform radiographic and other nondestructive testing on ammunition, ammunition components and other explosives to determine functionality and acceptability. Develop identification system for tracking and marking material and identifying accept/reject determination.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Program. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening and random testing.
  • This position requires an Arms, Ammunition and Explosives Security Screening and Certification in accordance AR 190-11.
  • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban /Lautenberg Amendment. This act bans individuals convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence and certain others from possession or access to firearms or ammunition.
  • This position requires you possess and maintain a valid stateside driver’s license.
  • At the WG-09 level, this position requires you to be Level 1 certified in Radiographic Testing under the National Aerospace Standard, NAS 410, or American Society for Nondestructive Testing Standard, ASNT CP-189.
  • At the WG-11 level, this position requires you to be Level 2 certified in Radiographic Testing under the National Aerospace Standard, NAS 410, or American Society for Nondestructive Testing Standard, ASNT CP-189.

Qualifications

About the Position: This position performs radiographic and other nondestructive testing on munitions, ferrous and nonferrous materials, manufactured parts, and completed assemblies to determine functionality and acceptability. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Nondestructive Tester without more than normal supervision. At the WG-07 level, must possess the ability to perform common tasks such as experience preparing the work area for inspection by obtaining items to be inspected; experience gathering tools and supplies required to conduct inspections; and experience operating simple hand tools to inspect items. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. At the WG-09 level, must possess the ability to perform common tasks such as experience performing preliminary inspections of components and experience recognizing deteriorated, damaged or unserviceable items; experience utilizing test and measurement gages and equipment to perform measurements of quality requirements on a variety of ammunition and related items; and experience using welding and test symbols. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. At the WG-11 level, must possess the ability to perform common tasks such as experience using radiographic methods to inspect, accept and reject ammunition, explosives, and other components; experience making final decisions on acceptability of items; and experience organizing and reporting testing results. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of MetalsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: You must be capable of handling the physical demands of this position ranging from light to heavy in physical exertions due to the equipment set-up requirements, type of materials and components. Mental alertness, manual dexterity and good eyesight are required. Incumbent is required to pass examination for color vision and for near vision, which is Jaeger No. 1 or equivalent. Working Conditions: This position is subject to numerous hazardous conditions due to, handling or association with chemicals, explosive munitions, and radiographic elements, which are toxic and skin irritating chemicals, fire hazards, explosive munitions and injurious rays, such as X-Ray and laser. Work to be performed indoors in well-lighted, heated and ventilated buildings with some work being performed outdoors on a live fire test range. You will be exposed to rain, cold and hot weather, and noise from test operations. Must wear protective devices such as hearing protection, protective footwear, laser eyewear and safety glasses.
