About the Position: The incumbent is assigned to lead the day-to-day operations at ranger field stations and for other natural resoource management staff.

Duties

Leading the conservation, preservation, restoration, and use of all natural resources. Planning and leading the construction for the rehabilitation of campsites, picnic sites, roads, and associated structures in the recreation areas. Lead the management of project cultural resources, and historic property resources. Serving as an alternate approving official, alternate contracting officer representative, news media spokesperson, emergency response coordinator, etc., in the absence of management. Attending civic and public meetings and hearings to speak or participate in discussion of problems and to promote mutual understanding and coordination of the overall Recreation and Resource Management programs. Promoting the protection of threatened and endangered species through aggressive public information.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • Driver's License required.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires a Corps of Engineers certification for operation of the motorboat.
  • Appropriate uniform required.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Incumbent may be required to operate flood control gates on waterways.

OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS 11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes meeting all of the following: 1) Participating and/or leading daily project operations and developing essential planning documents, such as emergency and management plans, 2) designing programs to protect and further enhance fish, wildlife, and/or forest resources and 3) Patrolling project lands and waters to prevent unauthorized use, trespassing, and/or destruction of property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. Basic Requirement for the Natural Resources Specialist (Ranger):
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
