This position is located in the Headquarters (HQ), Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA), Office of General Counsel (OGC). The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a legal assistant to all components of the General Council.
Duties
Responsible for coordinating, reviewing and processing of legal and administrative support activities in accomplishing the assigned mission of the Office of General Counsel (OGC)
Provide a wide-range of legal and administrative support. services to the Office of General Counsel (OGC)
Compose and prepare correspondence, not requiring legal interpretation, but requiring knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, in all manner of legal correspondence including but not limited to Freedom of Information/Privacy Act, Federal Tort Claims, personnel law, commercial law, and all nature of legal business routinely addressed by the Office of General Counsel (OGC)
Perform general administrative support duties of the GC in coordination with other administrative support personnel.
This position offers promotion potential to a higher grade. To prepare you for the higher grade, work assignments will be progressively more complex. After meeting all qualifications and requirements for the next grade level and with your supervisor's recommendation, you may be promoted without further competition. However, promotion is neither guaranteed nor automatic.

Qualifications
You must meet the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualifications for series 0986 and additional requirements by the announcement closing date. Your resume (and/or transcript if necessary) must clearly show that you have the qualifications described below. You can use experience, education, or a combination of the two to qualify. For the GS-7 grade level: Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level or equivalent to at least GS-06 under other Federal service pay systems, private sector, or military.
Specialized Experience for the GS-7:
Performs interrelated legal support work
Able to compile correspondence, and possess basic understanding of legal terminology.
Examine, adjust, reconsider claims and recommend settlements
For the GS-8 grade level: Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level or equivalent to at least GS-07 under other Federal service pay systems, private sector, or military.
Specialized Experience for the GS-8:
Able to compile correspondence, and possess basic understanding of legal terminology
Independently plan and carry out work, resolve routine problems and handle deviations that arise.
Examine, adjust, reconsider claims and recommend settlements and assist claimants with basic problems
You will receive credit for all relevant qualifying experience (paid and unpaid), including volunteer work done through National Service program (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
Additional Requirements that must be met by the closing date:
Physical requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. Some assignments may require walking, standing, and bending. Frequently carries light items such as records, files, or other papers. The work does not require any special physical effort or demands.
Time-in-grade applies to the promotion of current and former federal employees who hold or have held a permanent GS position in either the competitive or excepted service in the previous 52 weeks, including current employees applying under VEOA. For GS-7: You must have 52 weeks of Federal service at or equivalent to GS-6.
For GS-8: You must have 52 weeks of Federal service at or equivalent to GS-7..
Time after competitive appointment. Current federal civilian employees must have completed at least 90 days of federal civilian service since being selected for a non temporary appointment from a competitive examination register of eligibles (an announcement opened to the public) or under a direct hire authority.
