This position is located at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), in Washington, D.C. NIJ provides objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the state and local levels. The incumbent develops, implements, analyzes, and disseminates a range of extramural and intramural social science research and evaluation projects.

Duties

Serves as a Social Science Research Analyst in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Office of Research, Evaluation, Forensics & Technology (OREFT), Office of Crime Prevention and Youth Justice (OCPYJ). Provides scientific support for assigned research and evaluation projects in NIJ's Office of Crime Prevention and Youth Justice (OCPYJ) including a variety of program grants, research-based grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements. Serves as a subject matter expert for a segment of a social science or program area with a focus on child protection, delinquency prevention, youth justice systems, school safety, human trafficking, and/or hate crimes. Performs analytical research, evaluation, program development, and other tasks in furtherance of portfolios on crime prevention and youth justice. Develops, implements, analyzes, and disseminates a range of extramural and intramural social science research and evaluation projects that employ different research methods.

Qualifications

Basic Entry Requirements: Degree in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- - Combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. -OR- - Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrates the acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include: Applying social and behavioral science methods, principles, concepts, and analytical techniques to assist in conducting research related to child protection, delinquency prevention, youth justice systems, school safety, human trafficking, and/or hate crimes, contributing to the assessment and improvement of program effectiveness in crime prevention and youth justice. Assisting in specialized studies or evaluations of programs focused on crime prevention and youth justice, with a particular emphasis on areas such as child protection, delinquency prevention, youth justice systems, school safety, human trafficking, and/or hate crimes, ensuring that findings are evidence-based and applicable to policy and practice. Supporting research efforts as a resource on topics related to crime prevention and youth justice, including child protection, delinquency prevention, youth justice systems, school safety, human trafficking, and/or hate crimes, to inform programmatic decisions and improvements. Providing guidance to Federal staff, practitioners, and researchers on the application of social and behavioral science to crime prevention and youth justice, drawing on experience in research and program evaluation in areas such as child protection, delinquency prevention, youth justice systems, school safety, human trafficking, and/or hate crimes. Technical Qualifications: Applicants who meet the basic entry and minimum qualification requirements, as described above, will be further evaluated on the following technical qualifications: Ability to plan, conduct, and evaluate social or behavioral science studies Knowledge of a social or behavioral science field as applied to crime and justice issues Application of research principles, methods, and processes for systematic and objective inquiry Competence to analyze, understand, and advise others on technical and program management matters Additional information on the qualification requirements is outlined in the OPM Qualification Standards Handbook of General Schedule Positions and is available at OPM's website: https://www.opm.gov/qualifications/standards/indexes/num-ndx.asp All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
