About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Duties
Works at service desks throughout the Library to provide assistance to Library users. Answers basic questions regarding library use, policies, and procedures.
Processes items to be placed on Reserve for faculty. Adjusts records in the integrated library system to reflect the location and loan periods.
Monitors the use of materials and prepares statistical reports utilizing standard software packages.
Circulates materials to authorized users. Maintains patron and material databases. Registers users and building visitors.
Prepares and sends out overdue notices. Processes long overdue list, fines journal, and missing book lists.
Processes new and returned books utilizing pertinent procedures and instructions. Sorts, shelves, shifts, and shelf-reads the physical materials collection.
Receives/sends requests to borrow materials from other libraries. Reviews incoming requests and makes determination on lending materials.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- The position requires some evening, weekend, and holiday work.
- May be required to serve a 1-year probationary period.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) processing requests to borrow materials; 2) maintaining library collections; and, 3) utilizing online catalogs, databases, and/or automated systems to perform library functions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
