About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Work at service desks throughout the Library to provide assistance to Library users. Answer basic questions regarding library use, policies, and procedures. Answer telephones, emails, or other messaging systems on behalf of the Library. Assist users in locating appropriate research resources. Maintain patron and material databases. Ensure that the circulating physical materials collection is maintained in a timely and efficient manner. Receive and send requests to borrow materials from other libraries. Determine locations of materials requested by searching holdings in the library's online catalog. Monitor the use of materials and prepare statistical reports utilizing standard software packages.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position may require the incumbent to provide coverage on some evenings, weekends, or holidays.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). -OR- Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Attention to DetailComputer SkillsCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical) Time in Grade Requirement: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
