The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Salem VA Medical Center, Facility Management Service, Laundry Section, Salem, Virginia. The primary duties of the position involves receiving, sorting, and marking soiled linen and apparel; processing flatwork and roughdry items; assembling and issuing clean laundry.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Position receives, sorts and classifies all soiled linens including patient clothing and uniforms; classifies laundry such as rough-dry, flatwork, prints, etc., in order to process each item in its proper classification; weighs and properly records weight under the designated heading; moves soiled linen into the washroom; assists in operating the continuous wash extract system. Position is responsible for processing all types of garments including uniforms, shirts, trousers, related garments, along-with draperies, tablecloths and various miscellaneous items. Position is responsible for ensuring that all finished items meet the accepted quality standards. Torn and/or stained uniforms should be brought to the attention of the Laundry Foreman and /or placed in a designated rewash or salvage location. Required to understand written procedures, directives and instructions, as well as oral instructions. In addition, must be constantly alert and have understanding and ability to apply detailed instructions. Position is assigned to the Laundry, under the direct supervision of the Laundry Team Leader. In the absence of the Laundry Team Leader position will report to and receive general instructions from the Laundry Supervisor. Responsible for observing prescribed safety regulations and for careful handling of materials, tools, and other equipment to avoid creation of hazards or injury to others. Responsible to see that all prescribed aseptic techniques are followed, particularly in the handling of contaminated linens. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Employee must use proper body mechanics and coordination; must possess the strength and stamina for doing heavy physical tasks for long periods of time; and must be able to handle loaded carts weighing up to 700 pounds and lift loads over 50 pounds. Employee uses provided safety garments during the performance of all assigned duties. Laundries are extremely noisy and usually hot and humid. Workers are exposed to noise, vibrations, and atmospheric conditions associated with a textile care setting. Requires continuous walking on concrete floors, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting. In the possibility of exposure to laundry from patients with contagious diseases, workers wear protective masks, gloves, and gowns.
