This position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Medical Center, under Environmental Management Services, in Salem, Virginia. The position involves a wide variety of laundry work that requires substantial physical effort to lift bundles of laundry. Responsibilities will ensure that all records are adequately maintained since they become a part of the laundry production report.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to) Ensures receiving, sorting, and marking soiled linen and apparel; processing flatwork and roughdry items; Assembles and issuing clean laundry; Ensures; shaking out wet laundry' feeding into the flatwork ironer; catching, folding, and stacking ironed flatwork; folding roughdry laundry; Requires understanding written procedures, directives and instructions, as well as oral instructions Provides understanding and ability to apply detailed instructions; Provides correct weigh amount of presorted soiled linens and record correct weight on production sheet; Sets marking machine on laundry ticket and all unmarked laundry items; checks number of items on ticket against those submitted; Provides notes on the ticket numbers of items that do not agree with ticket; Follows prescribed aseptic techniques, particularly in handling of contaminated linens; Requires folding ironed flatwork at the delivery end of the flatwork ironer, placing in stacks of prescribed numbers; Wraps family or personal bundles with paper or plastic; Operates handkerchief press; Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:45 am - 3:30 pm. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The position is subject to continuous walking, stretching, stooping, lifting, pulling, pushing all of which are repetitive- type tasks. May be required to frequently lift bundles weighing up to 35 pounds and, on occasions, lift bundles weighing over 50 pounds. The position is subject to continual dampness, high humidity, excessive heat and noise. Must stand and walk on concrete floors, which on many occasions are either damp or wet. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements.
