This position serves as a Air Conditioning Equipment Operator/Operator in Charge will be assigned on a 24/7 rotating shift basis to the utility management plant which consists of both the steam generation plant and the air conditioning plant. Work is performed under the supervision of the Maintenance and Operations Foreman.

Duties

This position will serve as a Air Conditioning Equipment Operator at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland VA Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Major duties include: Makes repairs to large and small air conditioners, chillers, variable air volume control boxes and controllers and refrigeration systems ranging from 1 ton to 1250 ton units. Installs and makes repairs to air conditioning controls, such as pneumatic and electric/electronic modulating types. Maintains and services all ventilation equipment such as building service air exhaust systems, air supply fans and all associated motor applications to include all other related equipment. Makes repairs on systems which use a variety of special purpose air conditioning units that are at times modified to provide specific and critical climatic conditions in laboratories and other experimental test activities. Read pressure, temperature charts, calculate humidity from wet and dry bulb temperatures, using psychrometric chart, calculate heat loads and be able to comprehend the mathematics on a level normally used for cooling and heating load estimating. Test for refrigerant leaks, evacuates moisture from refrigeration system and components using chemical dryers, deep vacuum equipment. Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on heating and cooling systems associated equipment throughout the medical center as assigned. Monitor and respond to fire alarm system after normal working hours and weekends. Work Schedule: Sunday-Sunday 12:00am-12:00pm, rotating shifts, weekends and holidays. Required to work with large, heavy hand tools and large pieces of equipment. Encounters abnormal heat and noise. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Required to enter and clean the boiler furnace and steam drum. Working Requirements: Required to work irregular rotating shifts of 8 hours because the position is required to be filled 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Most work is done inside with the occasional exposure to temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit chemicals used in water treatment; flumes, steam in excess of 300 degrees Fahrenheit and loud noises. Outside work is usually performed in good weather except for emergency situations. There is some hazard of electric shock, burns, and cuts while testing and working with equipment. Required to wear VA provided uniforms and safety shoes. The use of protective clothing or gear, such as rubber aprons, hardhats, gloves, safety goggles, hearing protection and face shields are frequently required.

PERFERRED EXPERIENCE: 3 years of operating boilers and/or air conditioning equipment required.
