Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. As such, the selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status from approximately late November to early December during their first service year in this position. Duties

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. The major duties include: Operating multiple types of heavy engineering equipment inclusive of but not limited to: gasoline or diesel-powered heavy equipment, five cubic-yard dump trucks, road graders, and front-end loaders. Operated heavy equipment to move and load material such as dirt, and other material. Operate vehicles with auxiliary attachments (e.g., mowers, sweeper, sanding units) to perform duties. Animal Packing: Build loads, load animals, lead strings of up to 7 animals; monitor stock animals well-being to prevent injury; train and certify incidental riders to ride and pack NPS Stock. Animal Care Taking: feed and wrangle stock in wilderness and non-wilderness settings; Train and correct problem behavior in horses and mules. Physical Demands: Motor Vehicle Operation: Moderate physical effort is needed by this position in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavy loads. Required to frequently lift items weighing up to 50 pounds. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Animal Caretaking and Packing: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting while using saddles and tack. Frequently lifts and loads pack boxes and other objects weighing 50 pounds. Occasionally, with assistance, lifts and loads pack boxes weighing from 60 pounds to over 100 pounds. Routinely rides up to 15 miles daily, and periodically 25 miles or more. Frequently works with horses and mules weighing over 1000 lbs. Working Condition: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in mountainous wilderness areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. The incumbent will be working outdoors in extreme temperatures varying from + 100 to near 10 F. When working outside, worker is frequently exposed to bad weather. Incumbent works in rain, mud, snow, and in cold temperatures. Icy, slippery conditions are normal for approximately six months each year. The working environment is dusty, dirty, hot, wet, and under certain conditions noisy. There may be occasions during the season that the incumbent will work in heavy rain, falling snow, and frigid conditions. The incumbent may be required to work long hours, hike or ride long distances in rough terrain, and work around hazardous conditions. The individual may be exposed to poisonous reptiles and plants. At time he/she may be required to make stream crossings in cold, swift water, either by horse or by foot. The individual must be able to withstand the rigors of life in remote, primitive conditions for periods of two to twelve weeks at a time. SEKI specific Information: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks represent an extraordinary continuum of ecosystems (96% designated wilderness) arrayed along the greatest vertical relief (1,370 to 14,505 feet elevation) of any protected area in the lower 48 states. They are the highest, most rugged reaches of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (including Mount Whitney at 14,500 feet elevation) and feature the world's largest trees - Giant Sequoias. Sequoia National Park is the nation's second oldest national park (established September 25, 1890) and encompasses 404,863 acres. Kings Canyon was established on March 4, 1940 and encompasses 458,847 acres. Both parks provide a wealth of recreational opportunities via 835 miles of trails, wild and scenic rivers, alpine lakes, and caves, along with a full range of overnight lodging prospects to choose from that include 14 campgrounds. Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here.
