This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader within the Facilities Management Service Line at the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa HCS - Omaha. The lead will answer questions about overall work operations and reports any problems that may impact services or direct patient care. Participates in design reviews and punch list walkthroughs; helps commission with training and provides technical feedback.
Duties
Major Duties include but not limited to:
Performs all necessary repairs and preventative maintenance on all HVAC and refrigeration equipment within the Medical Center
Installs, maintains and repairs (both major and minor) all air conditioning and refrigeration equipment from 1/4-ton systems to 300-ton systems
Works in the layout and fabrication of duct and duct systems from 150 CFM to 70,000 CFM capacity
Performs preventive maintenance on diffusers, induction cabinets, mixing boxes, fire dampers and pneumatic smoke dampers
Maintains exhaust fans, fume hood fans, return air fans, and both direct and belt-driving types
Performs mechanic duties in the maintenance and repair of 20,000 pounds per hour water tube boilers with multi-stage duplex steam and electric boiler feed water pumps, accumulator tank, electronic and pneumatic controls and recorders, and condensate transfer pumps
Must know the complete operation of the Energy Management System including thermal storage systems, heat recovery systems and controls
Install, maintain, and calibrate both electronic and pneumatic controls such as relays, humidistat's, temperature controls, solenoid valves, chiller water valves, steam valves and other components used in conjunction with air conditioning, refrigeration and heating system
Answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees)
Troubleshoot, identify needed parts, locate best sources and initiate necessary procurement for parts and services needed to maintain equipment
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30pm

Certification Requirement: CFC certified (Universal) by the EPA as per the Clean Air Act of 1990
Drivers License Requirement: Current/valid state issued Drivers License
Physical Requirement: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Strenuous physical effort is required while dismantling and reassembling equipment. The incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. The incumbent must work from ladders, scaffolding, etc., where parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard to reach places. Stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently encountered for long periods of time. Hand dexterity is a critical requirement in completing most tasks.
Working Environment: Incumbent must always be mentally alert and physically capable, as this type of work is difficult and hazardous. The incumbent works both inside and outside of the Medical Center and is required to work in cramped areas with low overheads. The incumbent is subject to exposure from toxic refrigerants. Incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment while performing certain tasks.
