Duties

As a Supervisory Health Scientist you will: Utilizes subordinate supervisors and team leaders to direct, coordinate, or oversee work. Exercising significant responsibilities in dealing with officials of other units or organizations, or in advising management officials of higher rank. Assures reasonable equity (among units, groups, teams, projects, etc.) of performance standards and rating techniques developed by subordinates or assuring comparable equity in the assessment by subordinates of the adequacy of contractor capabilities or of contractor completed work. Directs a program or major program segment with significant resources (e.g., one at a multimillion dollar level of annual resources). Makes decisions on work problems presented by subordinate supervisors, team leaders, or similar personnel, or by contractors. Evaluates subordinate supervisors or leaders and serves as the reviewing official on evaluations of nonsupervisory employees rated by subordinate supervisors. Makes or approves selections for subordinate nonsupervisory positions. Executes the administrative and personnel management responsibilities related to the accomplishment of the mission assigned. Plans organizational structures, staffing needs, etc. Deals with personnel management policy matters affecting the organization, with personnel actions affecting employees, and with personnel-related actions having program impact. Determines the Branch's overall policies and approaches to be followed to achieve the missions of the Branch's and the Institute. Evaluates the activities to determine which programs areas are most productive, which are worthy of support in reaching goals, and which should be emphasized or curtailed. Develops and maintains relationships among a variety of national and international public health, medical, and environmental organizations, other government agencies, academic institutions, and state and local health departments. Coordinates research activities, legislative proposals, regulations, policies, program issues, and resources. Develops goals and objectives and provides leadership, policy formulation, guidance in program planning and development. Coordinates Branch's activities with other components of CDC and other Federal Agencies. Responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the Branch's policy and program objectives, developing operating plans, and evaluating progress. Develops specific projects and activities from broad program goals through the application of sound managerial and leadership concepts and practices, with a view toward enhancing the national impact of the Agency's activities. Maintains continuous crucial review of all policy and project objectives of the Branch's, and ensures that overall program plans are carried out as efficiently and effectively as possible with maximum utilization of resources.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following experience: utilizing subordinate team leaders to direct, coordinate, or oversee work, promoting and developing new training-related initiatives; and developing and maintaining relationships among a variety of national and international public health, medical, and related organizations, other government agencies, and state and local health departments.. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
