About the Position: Serves as a Public Affairs Specialist within the Public Affairs Office responsible for identifying communication needs and developing informational materials that inform internal and external publics of Fort McCoy's policies, programs, services and activities, and plan, execute, and evaluate the effectiveness of information and communication programs in furthering the installation goals.
Duties
Reviews and edits copy upon completion, ensuring grammatical/spelling accuracy, style guide compliance, and a logical/clear writing style in all material.
Responsible for planning, writing, and editing the installation's newspaper.
Reviews incoming news releases from diverse agencies and activities both on and off-post for timeliness, interest and accuracy.
Gather information and prepare stories that inform community readership about local and national events that have an impact on the local community.
Uses digital camera equipment to take high-quality photos to use in internal/external print products, websites, or other informational purposes.
Designs and prepares products for print using desktop publishing software.
Interviews a variety of subject matter experts to obtain current and accurate information for use in the newspaper articles, press releases or other informational products.
Maintains a cooperative relationship with the publisher and composing room and press personnel.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) generating, editing, publishing, and/or sharing engaging content on a daily basis through traditional and digital media platforms; 2) developing new information materials including news releases, communications action plans, feature articles, communication tool kits, and bulletins that increase communication with the agency's audiences; OR 3) creating multimedia content, for fliers, short clips, videos, etc., using a combination of writing, graphic design, photo manipulation and/or video editing. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Broadcast Journalism, Video Production, Video Editing, Digital Content.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
