This position is located within the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Northeast Area, located in Beltsville, MD.
In this position, you will be providing professional support performing a wide range of tasks involved in the reproductive efficiency in poultry.
Duties
Develops or designs various aspects of research projects on the basis of overall objectives outlined by the supervisor.
Maintains certification to serve as an associate user for radioactive assays as well as managing safe disposal of radioactive waste.
Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records. This includes maintaining records and compiling data and other information from various sources.
Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological).
Keeps exact, detailed records of experimental data. Tabulates, statistically analyzes, and summarizes data using software packages.
Requirements

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Time in Grade: Current Federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet the time in grade requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
Basic Education Requirements
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
In addition to the basic requirements above, all applicants must also meet the following minimum qualification requirements:
GS-09
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience setting up and conducting an experiment or research project related to biology; collecting, preparing, and evaluating biological samples and supporting records; and preparing reports summarizing progress or results of research.
OR
Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Animal Science, Physiology, Poultry Science, Biology, Molecular Biology, or Biological Sciences.
OR
A combination of education and specialized experience as described above.
Physical Demands
Work regularly requires lifting materials up to and exceeding 50 pounds (including help of weight bearing equipment). In addition, periods of standing, running, walking and frequently engaging in activities requiring bending and stretching are required. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exception hand/eye coordination. In many situations, the duration of the activities occur during an entire day. Travel by vehicle is required and further travel may be required to attend meetings.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in a laboratory with safety requirements. The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with radioactive reagents or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
