This position is located at Jewel Cave National Monument located in Custer, SD.

Duties
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately from April to October and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.
Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Conducts and oversees a program of data collection related to air quality, water quality, climate science, geology, hydrology, field mapping above ground and within Jewel Cave.
Plans and organizes biological / physical science activities, and is responsible for equipment maintenance and data/sample quality control.
Responsible for spatial and tabular data management related to physical science, including protection of sensitive resource data.
Summarizes data and conducts statistical analysis to assist in the preparation of reports and publications.
Writes funding proposals.
Advises Park managers on technical issues and compliance with applicable law and policy related to National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air and Water Acts, and National Park Service and Department of Interior Policies.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/17/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
This is an Interdisciplinary position; you must meet the BASIC educational requirement for at least ONE series *AND* meet the ADDITIONAL Specialized Experience and/or Education in order to qualify for this position.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Biologist GS-0401:
A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, as listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
BASIC EDUCATION for the General Physical Science GS-1301:
A. Degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors listed above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience, or additional education.
AND
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: (1) Conducted data collection related to air quality, water quality, climate science, geology, hydrology, field mapping; (2) Summarized data to assist in the preparation of reports; (3) Participated in the planning and organization of biological / physical science activities; (4) Participated in off-trail caving trips to conduct in-cave field work; (5) Acquired and maintained equipment and supplies necessary to conduct field activities. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited college or university that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first divide your semester hours of completed graduate education beyond the first year by 18 (or 27 for quarter hours). Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
