Duties
Works as a crew leader in the maintenance, repair, and stabilization of historic sites built of stone and mortar.
Leads other workers in (1) mixing soils, water, and amendments for mortars as prescribed; (2) removing damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage, stabilization, and preservation of original historic fabric; (3) implementing prescribed treatments (capping, veneering, repointing, resetting, new laying, etc.).
Works with the crew maintaining, repairing, and preserving structures, which involves removal of damaged portions of walls, selecting and dressing replacement stones, laying stones and repointing mortar, repair and replacing veneers, replicating original architectural styles.
Physical Effort: Performs heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying stone, mortar, sand, soil, scaffolding, and other small equipment. Normally required to climb scaffolding to heights of from 5 to 25 feet; bend, stand, and kneel for long periods of time. Sometimes required to hike long distances and climb steep slopes.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions ranging from cold, windy, and snowy weather to hot dry conditions, often in direct sun for all or most of the day, and often in the company of insects, rodents, and reptiles.
The incumbent is exposed to a variety of weather conditions while working outdoors and is subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds. They may be exposed to dust and dirt while mixing mortar, removing damaged portions of walls, and while handling various masonry materials. Frequently works around heavy equipment and vehicles. In accordance with OSHA regulations, must use all personal protective equipment as required by OSHA regulations.

Qualifications

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Masonry Worker Leader without more than normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
