Duties

Incumbent works as a crew leader in the maintenance, repair, and stabilization of sites built of stone and mortar. As directed by the supervisor, leads other workers in (1) mixing soils, water, and amendments for mortars as prescribed; (2) removing damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage, stabilization and original fabric; (3) implementing prescribed treatments (capping, veneering, reappointing, resetting, new laying, etc.). Obtains work schedule and plans from the supervisor for work on a daily and weekly basis. Works with the crew maintaining, repairing, and preserving structures, which involves removal of damaged portions of walls, selecting and dressing replacement stones, laying stones and reappointing mortar, repair and replacing veneers, replicating original architectural styles. Physical Effort: Performs heavy lifting up to 100 pounds, carrying stone, mortar, sand, soil, scaffolding, and other small equipment. Normally required to climb scaffolding to heights of from 5 to 25 feet; bend, stand, and kneel for long periods of time. Sometimes required to hike long distances and climb steep slopes. Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions ranging from cold, windy and snowy weather, to hot dry conditions, often in direct sun for all or most of the day, and often in the company of insects, rodents, and reptiles. Some contact is necessary with chemical agents such as cleaning fluids and preservation compounds some of, which are considered hazardous. Assignments involve exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar. Colorado National Monument is one of the grand landscapes of the American West, centrally located between Fruita and Grand Junction in the heart of Western Colorado. Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Masonry Worker Leader without more than normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Lead OR Supervise (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
