Duties

Incumbent works as a crew leader in the maintenance, repair, and stabilization of sites built of stone and mortar. As directed by the supervisor, leads other workers in (1) mixing soils, water, and amendments for mortars as prescribed; (2) removing damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage, stabilization and original fabric; (3) implementing prescribed treatments (capping, veneering, reappointing, resetting, new laying, etc.). Obtains work schedule and plans from the supervisor for work on a daily and weekly basis. Works with the crew maintaining, repairing, and preserving structures, which involves removal of damaged portions of walls, selecting and dressing replacement stones, laying stones and reappointing mortar, repair and replacing veneers, replicating original architectural styles. Physical Effort: Performs heavy lifting up to 100 pounds, carrying stone, mortar, sand, soil, scaffolding, and other small equipment. Normally required to climb scaffolding to heights of from 5 to 25 feet; bend, stand, and kneel for long periods of time. Sometimes required to hike long distances and climb steep slopes. Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions ranging from cold, windy and snowy weather, to hot dry conditions, often in direct sun for all or most of the day, and often in the company of insects, rodents, and reptiles. Some contact is necessary with chemical agents such as cleaning fluids and preservation compounds some of, which are considered hazardous. Assignments involve exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar. To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Masonry Worker Leader without more than normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
