NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities. The Office of Native and Indigenous Affairs enhances its engagement with Indigenous communities to meet the growing cultural demands. This position will implement NEH's response to a 2021 interagency memorandum of agreement to protect and promote the rights and freedom of Native Americans to use, practice, and preserve Native languages.
Duties
The incumbent will serve as the Director of the Office of Native and Indigenous Affairs, at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Reporting to the Assistant Chair for Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives, the Director of the Office of Native and Indigenous Affairs will oversee policy and strategy efforts for NEH's engagement with Tribal Nations and Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Island Indigenous communities; (2) coordinate and implement agency policies and initiatives as they pertain to Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities, including NEH's Tribal Consultation policy; (3) lead the agency's outreach and communications strategies with Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities in coordination with NEH's Offices of Outreach and Communications; (4) identify and maintain partnerships in coordination with the Office of Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives for NEH that enhance the agency's support of Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities, including with federal agencies and external organizations in the United States, its jurisdictional territories, and abroad.
Provides strategic direction and leadership for NEH's Indigenous-focused programs and initiatives, i.e., Native language revitalization, Federal Indian Boarding School, etc.- Implements programming in support of Native language revitalization in Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Indigenous communities.
Manage partnerships with Tribal Nations, Native-serving organizations, and federal agencies to support the preservation of Native languages, cultures, and histories, in coordination with the Office of Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives and the Assistant Chair.
Lead a team to perform research, assemble essential materials, analyze relevant factors, and develop conclusions based on findings.
Coordinate outreach efforts with the Office of Outreach to ensure consistent and culturally relevant engagement with Indigenous communities, including the planning and execution of convenings, listening sessions, and information sharing among state and jurisdictional Indigenous networks.
Recognize emerging trends, assess the significance of findings, and refine studies or recommendations to advance Indigenous initiatives.
Develop policies and partnerships to support Indigenous communities in preserving and promoting their cultural heritage and histories.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
At the GS-15 level Qualified candidates must possess:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level or equivalent experience.
Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, for example: (1) developing and implementing stakeholder engagement and outreach strategies and events for an agency or organization, including conferences, seminars, and meetings; (2) nurturing strong relationships with key stakeholders within government, grant-making organizations, academia, local and/or state entities, cultural institutions as it relates to Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities; (3) overseeing a team of professionals dedicated to executing stakeholder engagement strategies; (4) creating effective presentations and communications materials that convey the organization's mission and accomplishments; (5) determining short and long-term strategic goals to achieve them; (6) providing guidance and support to staff on best practices for stakeholder engagement OR other professional humanities work of equal importance, difficulty, and responsibility.
