This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. Incumbent serves as a Housekeeping Aide Work Leader for a crew of up to 30 Housekeeping Aides within the Sanitation Operations section of the Environmental Management Service Line (EMS). Incumbent provides leadership and direction to the employees for which he/she is responsible to accomplish the full range of responsibilities assigned.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs housekeeping duties to include cleaning of corridors, lobbies, offices, bathrooms, stairways, clinics, waiting rooms, etc. Operates heavy duty, technical equipment such as battery operated, self-propelled floor scrubbers, self-propelled vacuum sweeper, hot water/steam extraction carpet cleaning machines, etc. Maintains all horizontal and vertical surfaces throughout the Medical Center at a high appearance and sanitation level. Ensures that all floor, wall, and ceiling surfaces are cleaned properly with the proper product to provide the maximum results without damage to the surface. Monitors the work of Housekeeping Aides while work is in progress to observe that proper work methods, procedures, and safety practices are being followed. Provides coordination for requested chair set-ups/take-downs, and other possible special assignments within the scope of EMS. Occasionally operates vehicles (approximately 4% of time or less on a periodic basis) with approximate gross vehicle weight up to 10,000 pounds. Performs other duties as assigned. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/17/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Incumbent must have the physical capability to remain on his/her feet for long periods of time. He/she must be able to stoop, bend, push, pull, reach and exercise normal body movements to perform cleaning duties. He/she must have the visual acuity to see dirt, cobwebs, etc., to perform the duties of the position. Incumbent must have the physical strength to operate and control the various types of industrial equipment used in the housekeeping activity. He/she is required to set up and perform from ladders, lifts or scaffolds. Guidelines may include many unwritten policies and practices which may have to deal with judgement, efficiency and priorities rather than with procedural matters. Procedures for doing the work have been established, and a number of specific guidelines are available. The number and similarity of guidelines and work situations requires the employee to use judgement in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines, references, and procedures for application and in making minor deviations to adapt the guidelines in specific cases. At this level, the employee may also determine which of several established alternatives to use. Situations to which the existing guidelines cannot be applied or deviated from the guidelines are referred to the work lead or supervisor. Incumbent needs strength and stamina for performing heavy tasks for long periods of time and is continuously bending, stretching, twisting, and reaching while performing duties. Incumbent frequently lifts items weighing 25 pounds or more and may occasionally lift furniture, bags of trash and/or linen weighing between 50-75 pounds. incumbent is continually standing and walking. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Working Conditions: Decisions regarding what needs to be done are based on knowledge of procedural requirements of the work together with awareness of the special functions of the service. The work includes various duties involving different and unrelated processes and methods. The decision regarding what needs to be done depends upon the analysis of the subject, phase or issues involved in each assignment, and the chosen course of action may have to be selected from many alternatives. Incumbent usually works indoors in a well-heated, well-lighted, and well-ventilated building. He/she is exposed to dirt, bacteria, disagreeable odors, and may be subjected to contagious diseases associated with hospital settings. He/she is exposed to possibility of cuts and bruises from carts and machinery. Incumbent is exposed to skin irritations from cleaning solutions in concentrated form used in the housekeeping activity. He/she is exposed to vibration and noise from equipment used when performing cleaning tasks. Incumbent may, on occasion, be subjected to inclement weather conditions when removing trash from the buildings or performing other duties that may take him/her outside of a building. The position requires walking, standing, bending, and carrying items. This work requires care and safety conscious work practices with office equipment, elevated surfaces, tight work settings, and housekeeping equipment; avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
