This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Position involves using advanced math for precise fabrication, setting up and operating machines, and ensuring accuracy with specialized tools. It also includes creating templates and jigs, maintaining safety standards, and identifying material and equipment needs for each project.
Duties
Making templates and fixtures from materials like wood, metal, or paper to create various shapes and surfaces for fabrication.
Using advanced math (geometry and trigonometry) to calculate measurements and tolerances needed for creating workpieces, jigs, and machine setups.
Setting up and running machines like drills, shapers, and grinders to create precise angles, surfaces, and shapes.
Using measuring tools (like micrometers and gauges) to check and maintain accuracy while operating cutting and bending machines.
Following safety rules, keep the workspace clean, and identify materials and tools needed for each project.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Secret security clearance required.
- This position requires travel to other duty locations up to 10% of the time.
- Employee may be required to lift items up to 80 pounds.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position
- The position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.

Minimum Qualifications at WG-08 (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Model Mechanic without more than normal supervision. ability to perform common tasks such as fabricating, modifying, and/or assembling models made from various materials, interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and instructions and using and maintaining tools, machinery, and precision measuring devices. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Minimum Qualifications at WG-11 (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Model Mechanic without more than normal supervision. ability to perform some common lock operations tasks such as fabricating, modifying, and/or assembling models made from various materials, interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and instructions, using and maintaining tools, machinery, and precision measuring devices and leading a team. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Eye and hand coordination for operating various controls and handling lines while observing traffic and personnel, during crane lifting operations, lifting dam gates, etc. There is standing, stooping, bending, occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds, stretching, working in cramped positions and spaces, handling or maneuvering bulky items or equipment, and general continuous moderate to arduous physical effort required.
Working Conditions: Preponderance of work is performed outside subject to extremes of temperature and weather. There is exposure to injuries associated with working in restricted areas, occasionally cramped or uncomfortably hot or cold areas, from falling objects, from working with electrical power tools, and from falls while working on lock walls, dam service bridge, etc. While possibility of drowning exists as a result of falls while working around water, hazard is practically eliminated through observance of safety procedures and use of safety equipment. During maintenance operations is occasionally exposed to unpleasant fumes, dust, etc.
