Direct Hire Authority (DHA) Announcement for Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project Support Positions - recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position:
Model Mechanic within the Research and Development Fabrication Group performing tasks associated with research, development and experimental projects. Assigned tasks increase knowledge of the trade and develop skill for advancing to the Journeyman level.
Duties
Intermediate level worker developing first of their kind systems or apparatuses used for support of experimental or prototypic testing activities; tasks increase knowledge of the trade and develop skill for advancing to the Journeyman level.
Weld, solder, seam, glue plastics and braze various types of metals and plastics.
Assist in planning and laying out work according to blueprints.
Set-up and operate all cutting and bending machines and tools.
Fabricate models similar to existing or past models.
Assemble and install fabricated pieces at project site.
Make templates for patterns, jigs, and fixtures.
Make modifications to established models.
Use hand and power tools of the trade.
Requirements
- Appointment subject to a Secret Security Clearance.
- Pre-employment and annual physical examinations.
- Approximately 10% travel to other duty locations.
- Moderate to Heavy Lifting (up to 50lbs).
- Wear protective clothing and/or equipment.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Model Mechanic - Direct Hire without more than normal supervision, described as set up and operate machines and tools associated with using metal, wood and plastic working trade (profiles, drill, shapers, planners, grinders, etc,) in producing compound angles, contours, interrelated surfaces, angles dimensions, etc; and plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or specifications. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision
Physical Effort: The work frequently handles objects weighing up to 10 pounds, and occasionally handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds without the assistance of lifting devices. The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, and pulling and pushing at various stages of assignments to assemble items and install assemblies.
Working Conditions: The work is done in a well lighted, heated, ventilated shop with concrete floors; in areas that are noisy and dirty; and occasionally outside. He is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, and broken bones. The tasks may involve discomfort while wearing helmets, aprons, gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, and other protective equipment as required by changing assignments.
