The position is located in the Clinical Center Nursing Department (CCND). The incumbent in this position serves organizationally as a Health Technician (Apheresis). The position is located in the Clinical Center Nursing Department (CCND), Blood Services Section which serves multiple admitting institutes and provides services to a diverse and changing population. Duties
As a GS-0640-08 Health Technician (Apheresis) your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Provides supportive services to Clinical Center patients and donors participating in biomedical research.
Provides donor and patient care needs including safety, education, and comfort during apheresis and blood collection procedures.
Independently screens, assesses, and evaluates donors and patients for apheresis and blood collection procedures in accordance with NIH Clinical Center Nursing Department policies and standards of practice, professional evidence-based standards, FDA Guidance, and DTM policies.
Obtains and records vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, height, and weight using a variety of patient care equipment, such as automated blood pressure devices. Reports abnormal findings to the nurse, DTM fellow or medical team.
Independently performs point of care hemoglobin tests per DTM SOPs.
Independently performs apheresis and blood collection procedures in a safe, competent, and timely manner in accordance with CCND and DTM policies, procedures, standards of practice, standard operating procedures, protocol guidelines, and FDA and AABB regulatory guidelines.
Utilizes Soft ID to maintain patient safety when obtaining patient/donor lab samples.
Provides and documents accurate donor/patient education in the required system for donors, or CRI for patients and confirms donor/patient's comprehension.
Schedules Hemochromatosis outpatient appointments in the computer scheduling system.
Performs daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic quality control procedures and maintenance in a timely and competent manner.
Independently collects and labels requested and ordered blood samples with strict adherence to research protocol requirements and medical orders.
Ensures the safe handling of blood and blood components in accordance with prescribed protocols as well as CCND and DTM policies.
Provides mentoring and technical guidance for new and less experienced health technicians, ensuring compliance of policies and procedures; serves as a preceptor and participates in teaching. Preceptor and teaching includes newly assigned contract, supplemental, and Federal personnel.
Constantly monitors and tracks the stock to ensure critical supplies are available.
Promptly identifies, removes, and disposes of outdated and/or contaminated supplies appropriately.
Receives delivered supplies, inspects, package integrity, verifies labels, and provides documentation as per DTM SOPs.
Interprets and relates policies and procedures for donor eligibility for patients and donors when indicated and upon request.
Represents Blood Services Section on departmental committees, such as, Safety, Facilities, and Rees monitoring system committees.
Competently enters maintenance requests, and tracks and monitors maintenance work.
Hours: Monday-Friday Day shift.

Qualifications
You qualify at the GS-8 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS 7 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: collecting blood and blood components from donors/patients by either, collection of a unit of whole blood via phlebotomy and collection of blood components utilizing apheresis; screening donors and patients per FDA regulations and AABB Standards; performing quality control procedures on apheresis and blood collection equipment and processes.
