The National Eye Institute is recruiting for a Health Technician (Ophthalmology) who has experience working with an intramural outpatient clinic performing diagnostic ophthalmic tests and procedures on research protocol and consultation patients.

Duties

Perform psychophysical tests to access visual functions (e.g., visual acuity, visual fields, color vision, and dark adaption). Perform electrophysical tests of visual functions (e.g., electroretinography, electro-oculography, and visual evoked potentials). Perform procedures in accordance with the requirements of individual research protocols. Recognize standard measurements that are considered normal for each test. Independently assess the validity of test results. Coordinate patient visits for various specialty clinics including patient scheduling.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Health Technician (Ophthalmology), GS-0640 position at the GS-09 level, you must have: A. Completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or an LL.B. or J.D. This degree major must have been in a field of study with coursework directly related to the work of the position to be filled, that included at least 24 semester hours in courses such as biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, medical technology, or physics. B. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: perform psychophysical testing to assess visual functions (e.g., measurements of visual acuity, visual fields, color vision, and dark adaptation) on a variety of patients; measure refractive errors using both manual and automatic objective refraction methods and refine these measurements using subjective refractive methods; performing ocular diagnostic procedures (e.g. tonometry, ophthalmic ultrasonography); and performing basic maintenance and cleaning on ocular testing equipment. C. A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
