The primary purpose of the position is to supplement the permanent Park Ranger workforce by performing various duties designed to: (1) facilitate visitor understanding of park resources; (2) facilitate visitor enjoyment of the park and its resources; (3) facilitate and induce visitor behavior consistent with resource protection and to gain friendly compliance with the laws and rules for safe use of the park; and (4) encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources.

Duties

Provides front line information for visitors in the daily operation & greets visitors, provides basic orientation to the site and local area, provides safety messages, responds to questions in person, operates park radios and assists with trip planning. May be responsible for hiking trails, sea kayaking, serving as a deckhand on 18' to 26' power boats, and patrolling parking lots, beaches, and trails to make informal visitor contacts and monitor compliance with park regulations. Informs visitors about safety and hazards of boating and kayaking on Lake Superior. Tracks groups using the Meyers Beach kayak launching area, and monitors CUA groups for permit violations. Educates visitors regarding activities that impact upon the preservation of natural and cultural resources, including issues dealing with visitor safety. Performs various administrative duties, e.g. gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, etc. May issue field permits for camping and educates visitors regarding the requirements for backcountry hiking and camping, the reasons for the regulations, etc. Assists in developing consistent safety messaging and assists in training other employees to deliver that message to visitors. Compiles data and information from other employees on permit violations. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is located at the northern tip of the Bayfield Peninsula of Wisconsin 75 miles east of Duluth, Minnesota. APIS is a unit of the National Park system and contains 21 islands and 13 miles of the Wisconsin coastline of Lake Superior. The islands are spread over a portion of Lake Superior that is nearly 290,000 acres in size - an area larger than Rocky Mountain National Park - that is only accessible by boat. Eighty-percent of the park is with the Gaylord Nelson Wilderness Area. The park is best known for its sea caves, kayaking, sailing, beaches and lighthouses. It has a very rich natural and cultural history, including exceptionally high quality old-growth forest, landscape scale Canada yew, among the most diverse coastal features and highest quality wetlands in the Great Lakes, maritime cliffs and forests, diverse wildlife, and habitat for Federally endangered piping plover and State endangered American marten and peregrine falcon. The park is home to over 5,000 years of human history, from Native peoples to fishermen, loggers, lighthouse keepers and recreationalists. The park's cultural resources include some 150 historic structures including one of the Nation's best-preserved collections of historic lighthouses; as well as over 130 archeological sites; thirteen cultural landscapes; sixty-six campsites; and over 470,000 museum objects, historical photographs, and archival records. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/13/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: researching and conducting interpretative tours to point out scientific, historic, and natural features of parks, forests, historic sites, or other attractions; performing routine patrol operations; performing resource management tasks and duties supporting the mission of a park or area; providing visitor services such as explaining regulations, answering visitor questions and complaints and providing information about the weather conditions, trip planning, or leave no trace principles; assisting with car trouble, first aid or lost articles; checking special use permits, commercial use authorizations, camping permits, filming permits or similar. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate study in a related field. Related fields include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours worked per week in your resume and a copy of your transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
