Employment Type: Full-time
Responsible for assisting with coordination, execution, management, and planning of the park's visitor services and interpretive programming, conducted both in the lakeshore and through extensive outreach activities. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately late March through September and be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Duties

Serving as a leader within the division and responsible for leading a parkwide team of permanent and seasonal staff, volunteers, interns, and others to accomplish established agency and park goals. Assisting the Director in all aspects of interpretive planning, including development and maintenance of visitor use planning documents, annual staffing, budget, and operational plans. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with representatives of other organizations to foster effective partnerships and implement the mission and goals of the Park. Providing interpretive training and mentoring to staff, coworkers, volunteers, partners, and concession employees concerning the presentation of interpretive/education programs, the execution and development of interpretive techniques and skills, and the effective operation of facilities. Non-personal service work may include design, writing, and coaching of interpretive publications, informational posters and signs for closures and warnings, wayside exhibits, film/video, social media, webpage development, visitor center exhibits, and short-term off-site exhibits. Physical Demands: The work regularly includes long periods of strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting of objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Duties involve performing physically rigorous assignments in isolated outdoor environments while exposed to severe weather conditions. Must possess the ability to climb in and out of small unstable boats using over the side boarding ladders. Must be able to maneuver on wet, sometimes slippery rolling boat decks in various weather and seas conditions. Ability to jump short distance (3/4 feet) over water from a rolling deck to docking or landing site or vice-versa during adverse weather and sea conditions and periods of darkness. Work Environment: Some of the work is performed indoors in an office setting. The work is performed at various hours of the day and evening and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Shift work is required during the busy season. Incumbent is required to operate motor vehicles, motorboats, snowmobiles, and kayakers. The work is spread over 750 square miles of Lake Superior and Wisconsin mainland, greatly complicating the coordination of logistical support and severely impacting the time required to conduct supervisory responsibilities. The work of the division is often subject to stormy weather, adding to both the difficulty and necessity of providing resource education and visitor information to the public as well as creating hazardous traveling conditions for employees. Great Place to Live The Lakeshore headquarters and duty station is located in Bayfield, Wisconsin, a small lakefront community. The communities of Washburn and Ashland are 12 and 23 miles respectively to the south. The area has wonderful year-round recreational opportunities, from kayaking, sailing, boating and hiking in the summer to downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dog-sledding in the winter. Fishing, hunting, and camping opportunities are excellent. Bayfield County has thousands of acres of public lands including national forest, national lakeshore, county forest, and public/private conservancy areas. There is a rich culture and arts community, including live music "under the tent" at Big Top Chautauqua. Schools (K-12) and health clinics are available near all three communities, with a hospital and specialty care available in Ashland. Northland College, an environmental undergraduate institution, is in Ashland. Duluth is a major area hub for shopping, regional airport, commercial services, and medical care. The cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul and Madison offer bigger city amenities and are approximately 4 to 5 hours drive from Bayfield. The local Bayfield climate offers cool summers (50s to 70s, a few days in the 80s) and cold winters (averaging from 20 above to 20 below zero) and averaging around 90" of snow.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/29/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above, but I have an equivalent combination of such education and experience. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
