The position serves as the facility's primary Pest Controller, managing the total Pest Control Program. This includes the planning, identification, prevention, and control or removal/relocation of a variety of both common and uncommon animal and insect pests as well as nuisance plants and vegetation.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/16/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. This is described as experience that includes: Advanced knowledge of the principles and procedures of Integrated Pest Management including chemical control, precise surveys, and parasite and predator usage; Skill in pesticide and toxic chemical disposal including the proper use of safety procedures, in poison baiting techniques such as using zinc phosphide bait for rodent control, improper discharge of milky-spore disease for control of Japanese beetles, and in techniques used to trap wild animals such as raccoons; Ability to operate spraying and dusting equipment which requires the use of formulas and guidelines to insure proper balance of pesticides; Knowledge of Federal and State laws and requirements which deal with the mixing, application, and disposal of restricted use pesticides; Knowledge of algebra, arithmetic and selected formulas involving area, volume, and diluent measurements to compute proper pesticide applications; and Advanced knowledge of the appropriate pesticide toxicity, chemical solutions, baits, physical characteristics, life cycles, and feeding habits associated with a wide variety of pests. IMPORTANT NOTE: A Public Applicator or Operator license is required for anyone who uses or supervises the use of pesticides classified for general or restricted use as an employee of a state agency, municipality, or other duly constituted governmental agency or unit. -AND-- In addition, (IDPH) Illinois Department of Public Health requires that a Pest Controller must have - Completed a "Structural Pest Control Technician Exam" which qualifies them to apply pesticides to structural pests such as insects, spiders, rats, mice, birds, etc. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Effort Frequently lifts materials weighing over 50 pounds and carries chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods. Works in cramped and inconvenient surroundings which require working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently bends, crawls, climbs and moves equipment and furniture. Exerts more strenuous effort when required to dig around foundations and opening building structures. Working Conditions Work is performed inside and outside winter and summer in cold, drafty or hot, humid or water-covered circumstances, underneath buildings or in other close, smelly, dirty or dusty places. Discomfort may be experienced while wearing required protective clothing, respirators, goggles, or facemasks. Exposed to toxic vapors, liquids, and powders and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, insect bites, animal bites, stings, and other injuries.
