The purpose of the Pest Controller position is to reduce and control hazards to public health, stored products, structures and vegetation by conducting trouble-shooting inspections of buildings and grounds for evidence of conditions conducive to damage and infestation by insects, rodents, predatory animals, and other pests. The Pest Controller selects, mixes and applies restricted and general use pesticides. The position is located Environmental Management Service at the Hines VA Medical Center.

Duties

Duties Include: -Collects and identifies disease carriers such as different types of mosquitoes, lice, fleas, scorpions, wasps, fire ants, poisonous snakes, raccoons, and bats. -Inspects building plans and blueprints when planning applications within the walls, ceilings or floors of buildings. -Locates, recognizes and exterminates a wide variety of pest such as flies, gnats, bugs, lice, fleas, cockroaches, rats, ants, moths, beetles, snakes and other pests. -Identifies conditions conducive to damage and infestation by insects, rodents, predatory animals, and other pests. -Selects equipment and setting of controls to allow for wind, terrain, and population conditions when applying pesticides. -Uses wrenches, pliers, screw drivers and similar hand tools to perform operator maintenance on application equipment. -Changes nozzles, valves, and hoses; adjusts and calibrates nozzle settings; and lubricates motors, pumps, and agitators. -Uses masonry boring equipment and structural injectors to gain access to internal or subterranean spaces for applications such as termite control. -Operates spraying and dusting equipment which requires the use of formulas and guidelines to ensure proper balance of pesticides. -Applies Federal and State laws and requirements which deal with the mixing, application, and disposal of restricted use pesticides. -Applies knowledge of principles and procedures of Integrated Pest Management including chemical control, precise surveys, and parasite and predator usage. -Uses algebra, arithmetic and selected formulas involving area, volume, and diluent measurements to compute proper pesticide applications. -Mixes chemicals or other media in accordance with approved formulations or directions for the specific pest or condition. -Selects and set traps, bait, repellents for the control of pests in one or several types of environments such as in or around residences and offices, in food service areas, or in storage areas and warehouses. -Selects, mixes, and applies restricted and general use pesticides to control a wide variety of insect, vertebrate, and plant pests including those not commonly recognized and often hard to find. -Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/23/2023. NOTE: (IDOA) Illinois Department of Agriculture requires the following licensure for anyone applying pesticides for mosquitos, ornamentals, plant and turf management. A Public Applicator or Operator license is required for anyone who uses or supervises the use of pesticides classified for general or restricted use as an employee of a state agency, municipality, or other duly constituted governmental agency or unit. In addition, (IDPH) Illinois Department of Public Health requires that a Pest Controller must have - Completed a "Structural Pest Control Technician Exam" which qualifies them to apply pesticides to structural pests such as insects, spiders, rats, mice, birds, etc. COPY OF PUBLIC APPLICATOR OR OPERATOR LICENSE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION PACKAGES IN ORDER TO RECEIVE FULL CONSIDERATION FOR THIS POSITION. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Effort Frequently lifts materials weighing over 50 pounds and carries chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods. Works in cramped and inconvenient surroundings which require working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently bends, crawls, climbs and moves equipment and furniture. Exerts more strenuous effort when required to dig around foundations and opening building structures. Working Conditions Work is performed inside and outside winter and summer in cold, drafty or hot, humid or water-covered circumstances, underneath buildings or in other close, smelly, dirty or dusty places. Discomfort may be experienced while wearing required protective clothing, respirators, goggles, or facemasks. Exposed to toxic vapors, liquids, and powders and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, insect bites, animal bites, stings, and other injuries.
