The Sleep Physician Assistant (PA) serves as a consultant to various staff and disciplines within the Asheville VA Medical Center addressing the needs of patients with sleep disorders. The PA is involved in the management and care for patients with various sleep disorders and coordination of care.
This is an Open-Continuous announcement that will remain open until the position is filled. Applications will be reviewed in the order received and sent to the hiring manager for consideration.

Scope of assigned duties:
The Physician Assistant conducts a comprehensive assessment of patients' medical, physical and biopsychosocial status including:
- Obtains a relevant health and medical history
- Performs a physical examination based on age and history
- Conducts preventative screening procedures based on age and history
- Updates evaluation of health status to determine need for further health care
- Formulates appropriate medical diagnoses based on data obtained
- Orders appropriate diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests
- Identifies and prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological agents
- Identifies needs of the individual and family as a result of the evaluation of collected data
- Provides relevant patient family education
- Makes appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies
- Consults with collaborating health care professionals when doubt exists as to the diagnosis, when expected improvement is not soon apparent and when specialized therapeutic or diagnostic techniques are indicated.
- Determines the effectiveness of the plan of care through documentation of client care outcomes
- Reassesses and modifies the plan as necessary to achieve medical and health goals
- Reviews all sleep consult and triages consults. Based on available data identifies consults that need immediate attention and schedules them for urgent outpatient consultations. If consult request is unclear contact the provider to clarify the reason for the consultation and then triage appropriately
- Obtain all data pertinent to the consult
- Schedule history and physical exams for sleep consults
- Orders laboratory and appropriate sleep studies.
- Triages and responds to phone calls from sleep consult patients and clinic patients including prescription renewal, rescheduling appointments or studies and answering questions about procedures or treatments.
- Contacts patients concerning sleep study results, notification of CPAP technologists concerning ordering of positive airway pressure equipment. This also includes contacting the patient about educational classes concerning CPAP equipment.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (8:00am-4:30pm)

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
