The Charles George VAMC has an immediate availability for 1 (one) Assistant Chief within Mental Health.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
The Assistant Chief of Mental Health Service (MHS) is directly responsible for the effective management, functioning, and coordination of patient care services throughout all areas of the medical center where MHS staff are assigned. The incumbent works collaboratively with the Chief, MHS and other service line administrative personnel to develop, evaluate and maintain effective mental health services and programming throughout the medical center and in selected community-based settings.
The incumbent strives to ensure that all MHS policies, programs and services are congruent with the mission and vision of the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System, the Mid-Atlantic Network (VISN 6), and the requirements of external and internal review and accrediting bodies. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Mental Health Services.
The Assistant Chief ensures that all MHS policies and practices are consistent with the professional, technical, and ethical standards of the disciplines represented within the service. The incumbent provides direct supervision of program directors and frontline mental health staff including physicians, psychologists, mid-level practitioners, some administrative staff, and others as indicated.
As a partner in the leadership team, provides oversight of mutually agreed upon programs and services. Duties also include establishment of guidelines and performance expectations for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system; observation of employee performance; resolution of informal complaints and grievances; development of work improvement plans and personnel actions as necessary; advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters; disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area; review and approval/disapproval of leave requests; assure that subordinates are trained and fully compliant with the provision of safety regulations; adjust staffing levels or work procedures to accommodate resource allocation decisions made at higher echelons. In addition, incumbent provides service and technical counsel necessary to meet clinical, procedural, and administrative requirements related to the care and treatment of both inpatients and outpatients.
The incumbent assists in coordinating clinical and support program development with other services and serves as a change agent promoting change to facilitate high quality, cost effective, and patient-centered mental health care. The incumbent is responsible for justification for purchase of new equipment, improving work methods and procedures, oversight of the development of technical data, estimates, statistics, and other information useful to higher-level managers in determining goals and objectives, and other management strategies.
The incumbent acts in the absence of the Mental Health Service Chief and serves on the management team of the MHS.
The incumbent's effectiveness is demonstrated by leadership among peers, excellent interpersonal skills, leadership participation with the MHS through innovative proposals designed to enhance the overall quality of the care in the Mental Health Service.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
