Selectee will serve as Maintenance Mechanic within the Facilities Management Service, Engineering Branch at the Orlando VAMC, responsible to the Maintenance Mechanic Foreman. Selectee will be responsible for the day maintenance and operations of a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures and utilities. Typical work assignments include the visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for, and performance of repair work.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Inspection, maintenance and repair of the grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities. Use a variety of trade practices associated with the occupations of woodcrafter, masonry, pipefitting, carpentry, locksmith, sigh making, general mechanic and plumbing. Making and repair of high grade wooden items such as cabinetry, furniture, orthopedic devices and decorative woodwork for use in offices and for medical and other uses. Repair, alteration and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block and stone. Installing, modifying and repairing new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum and circulating pumps and radiators. Apply a variety of graphic arts techniques, including freehand, automated sign machines and mechanical lettering, to produce signs, posters and displays for inside and exterior use, including building and reflective traffic signs. Apply a through knowledge of the full range of locking devices and their parts in order to select substitute parts which would be suitable for use in fabricating locking devices to meet special security objectives. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/20/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Selectee is responsible for maintaining all supplies and material in a neat and orderly manner. Keep track of stock on hand and inform the Maintenance Foreman via a purchase request or other written means, a need for stock replacement. Participate in evaluating and developing construction plans and specifications for station level projects. Employee must frequently work in hot, humid, confined spaces around equipment and systems associated with the utility plant. They much climb ladders, bend, crouch, stoop and endure prolonged periods of standing and walking. Employee must lift parts and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. Perform internal inspections as required by Department of Veterans Affairs. Must be physically fit as work involves lifting, pulling, climbing, crawling, working with hands over head, working in confined areas and using arm and back muscles in tightening of connections. Must possess ability to be on feet for extended periods either standing, walking, working off ladder or staging materials and lift equipment weighing 60 lbs. and over. Request assistance when needed to avoid injury. Working Conditions: Selectee must work in areas of evaluated temperature, cold temperature, constant noise, chemical fumes, dirt, soot, rotating equipment, oil, grease and hot steam piping. Employee generally works outdoors but works inside occasionally for short periods of time and is exposed to outside weather conditions. Work is performed inside and outside, sometimes in severe weather, wet, cramped locations; is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises, toxic fumes, gases and acids. Subject to burns from steam lines, gas burning equipment, welding torches and molten solder. Possibility of falls exists due to work in high places. Subject to infections from unsanitary working areas such as sewers, waste traps and lines. Assist in other crafts within the Engineering Services. Must be aware of safety hazards and know what action should be taken to avoid them. Observe all local and National Safety Codes. Must know and comply with all the safety factors of the various trades to prevent fires and injury to patients and personnel. Must wear a respirator and disposable clothing including coveralls and cover for head, hands and feet when working in areas of possible asbestos contamination.
