We are currently recruiting for a Accounting Technician at the Battle Creek, MI VA Medical center. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties encompassing classifying accounting transactions; maintaining and reconciling accounts; closing accounts; preparing reports and statements; analyzing accounting data; and examining accounts.
Duties
Compiles and verifies data, frequently developing worksheets to improve the accuracy and completeness of information. Responsible for working with numerous, different, and unrelated systems.
Uses personal computer software, including but not limited to Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.), word processing, internet, and communications and knowledge of computer security.
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of personnel.
Researches and communicates with requestor and service line personnel to answer questions and resolve problems concerning obligations, amendments, adjustments, and payments.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with and gain the cooperation from all levels of the administrative and professional staff, including supervisors, management officials, department managers and other high level officials and/or representatives of other Federal agencies and private industry.
Reviews pending items and ensures that follow-up action is taken on all items pending for excessive periods of time. Traces and resolves discrepancies.
Reviews and analyzes reports, classifies errors, takes corrective action to balance reports, verifies corrected copy and determines the source of processing deficiencies and recommends corrective procedures.
Analyzes documents for accuracy and authorization, obligations, and payments.
Responsible for transactions involving the disbursement and receipt of funds, and shows attention to detail when applying appropriations, object classes, and fund control points, to ensure proper deposits and credits.
Locates, reviews, and interprets guidance including manuals, directives, handbooks, financial policies, decisions.
Ensures compliance with technical guidance, federal law, and internal controls.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:300AM- 4:30PM
Telework: VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/16/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Maintains accounting regulations, practices, procedures, and policies related to accounting transactions and records;
Assembling, reviewing, and maintaining complex accounting transactions;
Ensuring compliance and recommending action in accounting practices;
Researching or investigating problems or errors that require reconciling and reconstructing incomplete information, conducting extensive and exhaustive searches for required information, or performing actions of similar complexity; and
Utilize accounting systems to reconcile errors that require an understanding of nonstandard procedures or to provide assistance in the development of automated procedures for clerical operations.

Physical Requirements: Work is primarily sedentary.
