Duties

Performs at least one of the following duties; processes documents for the shipment of freight, processes truck load (TL) and less-than-truck load (LTL) documents, processes air documents. Provides assistance to the freight rating and classification process, initiates requests, accomplishes limited studies or projects. Initiates and processes emergency Material Release Orders (MROs) using all modes of shipment, researching, investigating, and resolving discrepancies for inbound/outbound shipments which may be over, short, damaged, or misdirected. Performs freight shipment and transportation functions. Conducts inspections to retrieve astray freight. Performs extensive research utilizing various supply systems, checks storage locations and/or staging areas to determine the validity of the complaint. Prepares and schedules routing and priority shipments through the supply and transportation automated system. Freight plans truckloads and rail car loads for release by dividing item dimensions into conveyor dimensions to determine number of conveyors required to move shipments. Prepares load plans and provides instructions for reloading. Makes arrangements with freight forwarders to ship Foreign Military Sales (FMS) freight through the transportation system.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Transportation Assistant your resume and supporting documentation must support: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-6 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Selecting modes of carriers, consolidating shipments or coordinating connections. Responding to customer inquiries, and ensuring regulatory compliance throughout the movement process. Expedite or locate lost or misplaced shipments. Reconcile, prepare, verify and update a variety of transportation reports and documents. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: Work is generally of a sedentary nature. During periods of work in the warehouse, work may require some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. May require moderate lifting and carrying, 25-44 pounds Employee is required to wear appropriate safety clothing and equipment as determined by safety requirements and the supervisor. Work Environment: Employee works generally in an office setting involving everyday risks or discomforts. Employee is frequently required to go to warehouses and loading docks to obtain information and must exercise care when working around materials handling equipment, conveyors and freight. In some situations, employee is required to wear protective clothing or equipment.

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
