You will serve as an Insulator in the Production Resources Department, Pipe Shop, of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will lay out and lift chipboard templates, then cut, fabricate, and install acoustical insulation and thermal hull insulation by cementing or holding in place by using gun-welded studs or adhesives.
You will mix cement and mastics and apply them with a trowel to fill joints and cracks.
You will cover insulation with netting and secure netting with wire or metal straps.
You will be required to take bulk samples to test for asbestos content of installed insulation.
You will perform other duties as assigned.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Ability to evaluate installation areas and estimate the types and amount of insulation required while considering factors of size, shape, temperature, accessibility, environment, and physical appearance;
Ability to insert lacing rings, washers, hooks and grommets into the insulating covers and fasten them with wire;
Ability to perform mathematical calculations in order to calculate and perform a variety of linear, angular, cubic, and circular measurements and compute such factors as thermal conductivity and sound absorbency to properly select the insulation required;
Ability to plan and layout, repair, and modify projects to ensure a uniform finish, stability, and continuity of insulating qualities;
Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, process instructions, specifications, and project plans to identify the dimensional characteristic of surfaces, curves, angles, and slopes to be covered.
