This position provides training for all Sterile Processing Services (SPS) staff. Incumbent supports the Chief, SPS in all duties related to orientation, training, competency, and annual review. Incumbent will provide hands on training and competency to all SPS staff covering the entire process from decontamination, assembly, sterilization, scope reprocessing and distribution of critical and non-critical Reusable Medical Equipment throughout medical center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: The Trainer is responsible for developing formal and informal written plans for SPS training program, in compliance with accreditation organizations and VHA-specific requirements as well as medical center policies and procedures for SPS. Training courses and outlines will be reviewed annually and updated as necessary. Facilitates training of SPS staff through educational programs and job specific instruction. Should be well structured, include hands on demonstrations, return demonstrations and an evaluation. Improves SPS processes by facilitating the application for new technology of reusable medical devices by training all new and existing staff. Develops, monitors, and revise SPS educational programs for both new and existing staff and as required to meet new directives and training goals. Documents and assess staff's training, to identify areas of strength and need. Develops an education plan (literature review, continuing education, in-services, certification and/or formal education) to maintain and improve knowledge in specialized areas of processing RME. Serve as a formal or informal preceptor and/or mentor to staff and as a subject matter expert (SME) point of contact. Participates in tracking, trending and analyzing training, competency and education data for quality assurance reports to identify opportunities for improvement. Identifies opportunities for improvement, makes recommendations and/or prepares reports based on findings. Initiates and or participates in training interventions to change practice based on performance improvement data of manufacturer's instructions for use. Develops and conducts the annual review of the SPS preceptor program. Develops a plan for follow-up training as indicated to achieve competency. Coordinate with service chief, RME coordinator, Nurse educator and other subject matter experts to schedule training presenters as necessary. Conducts continual and annual staff competency review for all SPS staff. Ensures all staff are competent on each SOP ensuring all are completed on time as required by directive and/or Chief, SPS. Balances the training needs among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, and assures timely accomplishment of the assigned training. Monitors and reports the status and progress of training and adjusts curriculum according to established priorities, weekly. Maintains current knowledge of policies, directives, HSPA guidelines as well as knowledge of AAMI and AORN Standards. Incumbent is a resource for Medical Supply Technicians (MST) in the loading and operation of sterilizers such as Steam, Steris V-Pro and High-Level disinfecting process as well as reprocessing of endoscopes. Incumbent will accommodate special and emergent training requirements through consultation and coordination with medical/surgical professional staff. Incumbent assists Assistant Chief, SPS as SME on the proper use, cleaning, and sterilization of RME and any problems that may arise. Incumbent acts as a liaison and SME for SPS to all services to assure their RME needs are met. Incumbent will manage SOP for current and new equipment, to include, reviewing, and providing training to all staff. Incumbent will assess learning needs and develop learning plans with strategies/objectives that meet the needs of staff as well as the service. Incumbent will develop and assess competencies according to established guidelines and maintain a competency assessment schedule that assures timely and complete assessments that are well documented. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part. Experience and/or Education: Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or Creditable Experience Knowledge of Current MST Practices. To be creditable, the experience must have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) associated with MST responsibilities. Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as a MST. Quality of Experience. Qualifying experience must be at a level comparable to MST experience at the next lower grade level of the position being filled. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a MST is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a MST employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service. Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-07 Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Trainer: Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6). GS-6 experience includes: Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation. Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of SPS and Infection Prevention regulations. Knowledge of procedures and/or operations in training developed for, and operations of SPS functions for both new and existing staff. Ability to manage integrated training programs as it relates to sterile processing procedures. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel or other software programs in order to complete reports and develop skills. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and management officials in regards to sterile processing procedures.
