This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain DoD personnel to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: As a Deckhand assigned to the Dredge Jadwin, you will be assigned to accomplish a combination of tasks in connection with the making up and breaking of tows.
Duties
Secure floating plant with manila and synthetic lines, cables, wire straps, rachets, etc.
Perform housekeeping and maintenance tasks such as washing down decks, chip-ping paint and rust from bulkheads, timber heads, cavels, deck equipment, and painting.
Greasing moving deck equipment such as capstans, tow winch, or electric cranes to ensure working condition.
Assisting other craftsmen with maintenance and repairs.
Requirements
- The duty location of this position is wherever the Dredge Jadwin is located.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Successfully complete and pass a pre-employment physical.
- Work in inclement weather conditions.
- Successfully complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen as well as random drug screenings.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Deckhand without more than normal supervision. Duties include: Conducting channel patrol activities, outboard motor operation, deck equipment repair, general maintenance and housekeeping on a floating plant. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Efforts: Work requires substantial physical effort when handling heavy cables, equipment, and machinery; while making and breaking tows; and when washing, scrubbing, cleaning, chipping, and painting surfaces. Heavy lifting up to 40 pounds may be required. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and crouching and walking.
Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes in heat and cold and heavy rainfall. Workers are exposed to paint fumes, and are subject to cuts and bruises while working with equipment. There is the possibility of eye injury while chipping paint and rust. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, and dirty or cramped situations.
