Duties
Analyze medical records retrospectively for adherences to local, BUMED, and Joint Commission (JC) policies.
Contacts appropriate medical staff regarding questions on the completion of medical records.
Promote records accountability and ensures all medical records are accounted for via the automated or manual record tracking system.
Ascertain that all established clinical diagnoses are listed in order of clinical importance in relation to current period of hospitalization and that
the terminology is in accordance with accepted nomenclature.
Evaluate the order of diagnosis, E and M, CPT, and HCPCS and ensures the assignment of correct coding is addressed.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A favorable Tier 3 background investigation is required for all Non-Critical Sensitive (NCS) positions with access to network systems and
Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
- IAW BUMEDINST 6230.15B, susceptible or occupationally exposed health care employees who have direct contact with patients will receive appropriate immunization against communicable diseases,
- unless a current immunization, a protective titer, or a medical exemption is documented. This policy applies to all health care settings, regardless of age or sex of the health care employee.
- Employees who have contact with/or potential exposure to human blood/blood products (whether from patient care, laboratory, other health
care settings) are provided hepatitis B virus vaccine IAW the local blood borne pathogen exposure control plan.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- One year trial/probationary period may be required.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes reviewing, analyzing, processing, and maintaining medical records and compiling or extracting medical records data to ensure compliance with regulatory guidance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
