About the Position: This position is with Defense Health Agency, Army Medical Center Madigan, Department of Medicine, Pulmonary Functions Laboratory, located in Tacoma, Washington.

Duties
Perform the full spectrum of pulmonary function testing to include spirometry, lung volume studies, flow studies, DLCO testing, among other pulmonary function test.
Perform the full range of bronchoscopic procedures, including basic bronchoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, transbronchial biopsy, Wang fine needle aspiration among others.
Perform sputum induction and draws arterial blood samples for patients through arterial blood punctures and arterial catheters.
Administer a variety of inhaled medications including bronchodilators, pentamidine, and methacholine.
Perform basic life support, including chest compressions and rescue breathing, and assists with emergency intubations and bag-valve-mask resuscitation.
Perform expert high-level disinfection of bronchoscopy equipment.
Operate complex pulmonary function testing software and documents results in the electronic medical record.
Perform daily and monthly quality control and maintenance on bronchoscopy and pulmonary function testing equipment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying schedule

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating respiratory therapy patients; setting up, operating and/or maintaining respiratory therapy equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Respiratory Therapy and/or Respiratory Care.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
A Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from National Board for Respiratory Care is preferred, but not required.
