Duties

An appointment with the U.S. Attorney' s Office offers unique and challenging experiences for the highly motivated attorney; an opportunity to work on their own caseload and appear in court. Working in the Civil Division, the Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) will primarily focus on enforcing the ADA to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in the Eastern District of Virginia. The AUSA may also enforce other civil rights statutes. The AUSA will be responsible for handling matters from intake to investigation, and ultimately to settlement and/or litigation. The AUSA may also engage in community outreach and training activities. The Civil Division is comprised of more than thirty lawyers who defend the interests of the United States, its agencies and employees in litigation filed against the government, conduct Affirmative Civil Enforcement under the False Claims Act and other anti-fraud statutes, enforce civil rights laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as servicemember and veterans rights statutes, and protect the interests of the United States in bankruptcy court. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof.   • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.

Qualifications

Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), have at least one-year post-JD legal or other relevant experience, and possess superior oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment and function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Please submit a cover letter explaining your interest in working in civil rights and which of the four District offices you wish to work in. Preferred qualifications: Experience enforcing civil rights statutes, especially the ADA; a strong desire to work on civil rights enforcement cases; federal litigation experience; and/or a federal judicial clerkship is desired.
